<\/p>\nI finally found a quotation I’d been looking for since I was in India. There were scriptures on the walls of Birla Mandir in Delhi, but no photography or bags allowed inside, so I couldn’t take a picture of the one that struck me or write it down.<\/p>\n

There the sun does not shine,
\nnor the moon and the stars;
\nThere lightning does not shine,
\nof the common fire need we speak!
\nHim alone, as he shines, do all things reflect;
\nthis whole world radiates with his light.
\n–Mundaka Upanishad<\/p><\/blockquote>\nIt’s a little more theistic than Buddhism, but I like it. Maybe it’s because it reminds me of Torei Zenji’s Bodhisattva Vow:<\/p>\n
When I look deeply into the real form of the universe,
\neverything reveals the mysterious truth of the Tathagata.
\nThis truth never fails:
\nin every moment and in every place
\nthings can\u2019t help but shine with this light.
\nRealizing this, our ancestors gave reverent care
\nto animals, birds, and all beings.
\nRealizing this, we ourselves know
\nthat our daily food, clothing and shelter
\nare the warm body and beating heart of the Buddha.
\nHow can we be ungrateful to anyone or anything?
\nEven though someone may be a fool,
\nwe can be compassionate.
\nIf someone turns against us,
\nspeaking ill of us and treating us bitterly,
\nit\u2019s best to bow down:
\nthis is the Buddha appearing to us,
\nfinding ways to free us from our own attachments–
\nthe very ones that have made us suffer
\nagain and again and again.
\nNow on each flash of thought
\na lotus flower blooms,
\nand on each flower: a Buddha.
\nThe light of the Tathagata
\nappears before us,
\nsoaking into our feet.
\nMay we share this mind with all beings
\nso that we and the world together
